Documents You Need for a Finnish University Application

One of the most common reasons applications stall is missing or incorrectly prepared documents. This checklist covers exactly what Finnish universities ask for and how to prepare each item correctly. Requirements are verified against Studyinfo.fi and individual university admissions pages.

1. Degree certificate and transcripts

You need proof of your completed (or soon-to-be-completed) degree and an official transcript of records. If they are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, provide an official translation alongside copies of the originals.

2. Proof of English proficiency

An IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or equivalent score that meets your programme's minimum. Results must be valid (within two years) on the application deadline. Some applicants qualify for a waiver based on a prior English-medium degree.

3. Passport or official ID

A copy of the photo page of your valid passport. Ensure your passport is valid well beyond your planned arrival — you will need it again for the residence permit.

4. Motivation letter and CV (programme-dependent)

Many master's programmes require a motivation letter and academic CV. Tailor the motivation letter to the specific programme: why this field, why this university, why Finland.

5. Legalisation or apostille

Some universities require your degree documents to be legalised or apostilled to confirm authenticity. Check each programme's requirement early, as apostille processes in your home country can take weeks.

Common document mistakes to avoid

Uploading unofficial translations, submitting an English-test score that expires before the deadline, and forgetting a required legalisation are the three most frequent errors. Double-check each programme's exact document list before you submit.
