IELTS for studying in Finland
Almost every English-taught degree in Finland asks non-native speakers to prove their English with a recognised test. IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted. Here is exactly what score you need, and how to prepare efficiently.
IELTS scores Finnish universities require
Requirements vary by programme, but the following bands cover most English-taught admissions in Finland. These are minimums — meeting them makes you eligible, not guaranteed a place.
| Study level | Typical IELTS Academic minimum |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's (English-taught) | 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 |
| Master's (most fields) | 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5–6.0 |
| Competitive Master's (e.g. Aalto, UH) | 6.5 overall, writing 5.5–6.0+ |
Always confirm the exact band and any sub-score minimums on your specific programme page before you book your test.

Preparation tips
- Register 3–4 months before your application deadline — Finnish joint application closes in early January, so a November test date is a safe target.
- Sit IELTS Academic (not General Training) — Finnish universities only accept the Academic module.
- Confirm the minimum overall band and any sub-score minimums on your exact programme page; a strong overall score can still be rejected if one section is below the sub-score floor.
- Budget for the fee (around €240–€260 in most countries) and, if needed, one retake.
- Practise the Writing and Speaking sections most — these are where international applicants most often lose the half-band that matters.
- Keep your Test Report Form (TRF) safe; universities may verify it directly with the test centre.

Frequently asked questions
- What IELTS score do I need to study in Finland?
- Most English-taught bachelor's programmes require an overall IELTS Academic band of 6.0 (with no section below 5.5), and most master's programmes require 6.5. Competitive programmes at universities such as Aalto and Helsinki may set a higher writing sub-score. Always check the exact requirement on your programme page.
- Do all Finnish universities accept IELTS?
- Yes. IELTS Academic is accepted by every Finnish university that teaches in English, alongside TOEFL iBT and (at many universities) PTE Academic. EU/EEA applicants and those who completed a prior degree in English may sometimes be exempt.
- How long is an IELTS score valid?
- IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date. Make sure your score is still valid on the programme's application deadline, not just when you sit the test.
- Can I get an English-test waiver in Finland?
- Often, yes. Many Finnish universities waive the IELTS/TOEFL requirement if you completed your previous degree entirely in English in an eligible country. The rules vary by university, so check the language-requirement page for each programme.
