How to Apply for a Finnish Student Residence Permit
If you have been admitted to a Finnish university or university of applied sciences, you will need a residence permit before you can move to Finland — not a visa. Finland is part of the Schengen Area, but for stays longer than 90 days, a residence permit issued by the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) is required.
Who Needs to Apply
Citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland do not need a residence permit — they only need to register with the local municipality. All other nationalities must apply. Check Migri's website for the full list of exemptions.
Step 1 — Get Your Admission Letter
You must have an official acceptance letter from a Finnish higher education institution before applying. The letter must confirm your study programme, start date, and duration.
Step 2 — Apply via Enter Finland
Migri's online service 'Enter Finland' is the primary application channel. Create an account, fill in the application form (OLE_OPI), upload your documents, and pay the processing fee (€350 as of 2024). You can later book a biometrics appointment at a Finnish embassy.
Step 3 — Provide Required Documents
You will need: a valid passport (valid for at least 15 months), the admission letter, proof of sufficient funds (€560/month recommended), proof of accommodation in Finland, and health insurance if required for your nationality.
Step 4 — Biometrics Appointment
After submitting your application online, book an appointment at the nearest Finnish embassy or consulate to provide fingerprints and a photo. Without biometrics, your application cannot be processed.
Processing Times
Processing typically takes 1–3 months. Apply at least 3 months before your programme start date. You can track your application status in Enter Finland in real time.
