Extending Your Student Residence Permit in Finland
Most student residence permits in Finland are issued for one year at a time, even if your programme is longer. You will need to extend your permit before it expires — and the process has some important deadlines you cannot miss.
When to Apply for an Extension
Apply for an extension no later than 3 months before your current permit expires. Applications submitted after the expiry date are treated as new applications and cost more. Migri recommends applying 4–5 months in advance to be safe.
Documents Required for Extension
You will need an updated transcript of records from your university showing study progress, an updated enrolment certificate, proof of sufficient funds, and your current passport. Migri may request additional documents depending on your situation.
Proving Study Progress
This is the most critical part of the extension. Migri expects you to have completed a reasonable number of credits per year — typically around 45 ECTS per academic year. If your progress is slow, include a letter from your student advisor explaining the reasons.
Applying Online
Extension applications are submitted through Enter Finland. If you are already in Finland, you do not need to visit an embassy. After applying, you will receive a 'pending application' document that allows you to continue living in Finland while the decision is being made.
What Happens if Your Application Is Denied
If your extension is denied, you have the right to appeal to the Administrative Court within 30 days. You should contact your university's international office immediately for support and guidance.
