Healthcare in Finland for International Students

Finland has an excellent public healthcare system. As a registered resident with a valid student permit, you have access to affordable healthcare through both the Student Health Service (FSHS/YTHS) and the municipal health centres.

YTHS — The Student Health Service

YTHS (Ylioppilaiden terveydenhoitosäätiö) provides primary healthcare specifically for university students. Services include general medicine, mental health, dental care, and sexual health. Students enrolled at Finnish universities automatically belong to YTHS and pay a compulsory health care fee of around €35 per semester.

How to Register

Register with YTHS online at yths.fi. You can book appointments for a nurse consultation first, who will then refer you to a doctor if needed. Many services can be initiated digitally, including the OmaYTHS app.

Mental Health Services

YTHS offers short-term psychological counselling and psychiatric consultations. Waiting times vary by location and season. For immediate mental health crises, contact the national crisis line (09 2525 0111) or visit the emergency department.

Pharmacies (Apteekki)

Finnish pharmacies are professional, staff speak English, and many common medications are available over the counter. Prescription medications are partially reimbursed by Kela (Social Insurance Institution) if you are registered in the Finnish population system.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

EU students should bring their EHIC card from their home country. It covers emergency healthcare costs in Finland. Non-EU students should arrange health insurance before arrival — Migri may require proof of insurance for your visa application.
