Getting Around Finland: Transport Guide for Students
Finland has a reliable, well-integrated public transport network. As a student, you are entitled to significant discounts on trains, buses, and local transit — making it one of the most affordable countries in Europe to travel.
Local Public Transport
Helsinki uses the HSL network covering buses, trams, metro, and commuter trains. The HSL app allows you to buy single tickets, day passes, or a season ticket. A student season ticket is around €40–50/month and covers all zones. In other cities, check the local transport authority: TKL (Tampere), Föli (Turku), Linkki (Jyväskylä).
Student Discount on VR Trains
VR, the Finnish national rail operator, offers a 50% student discount on long-distance trains. You need a valid student card issued by FRANK — a digital card available free of charge on the Frank app. Simply show your Frank card when buying a ticket.
Intercity Buses
Onnibus and Matkahuolto operate affordable intercity coaches. Onnibus frequently runs promotional fares as low as €1–5 for booking in advance. It is often cheaper than the train for popular routes like Helsinki–Tampere or Helsinki–Turku.
Cycling
Finland's cities are highly cycle-friendly with dedicated lanes even in winter (many are ploughed). City bikes (kaupunkipyörä) are available in Helsinki, Espoo, Turku, and Tampere for a seasonal pass of around €35. Buying a second-hand bike on Tori.fi or Facebook Marketplace for €50–100 is also popular.
Flying Within Finland
Domestic flights connect Helsinki with Oulu, Rovaniemi, and other northern cities. Finnair and Nordic Regional Airlines operate these routes. For students going to Lapland, a flight is often faster and comparable in price to the overnight train.
