Student Discounts in Finland: The Complete Savings Guide

Finland has an extensive system of student discounts that can save you hundreds of euros per year. The key to accessing most of them is the FRANK student card — a digital card that proves your student status nationwide.

The FRANK Student Card

FRANK (previously known as ISIC Finland) is the official student discount card. Download the Frank app, verify your student status through your university email or student number, and the digital card is active immediately. Physical cards can also be ordered for €7.90 if needed for international use.

Transport Discounts

The biggest savings come from transport. VR trains offer 50% student discount on all long-distance routes with your FRANK card. Local public transport in most cities also offers student monthly passes at significantly reduced rates — often 30–50% off the regular price.

Food: Subsidised Canteen Lunches

The most significant student benefit is the Kela-subsidised canteen lunch. With a valid student card, a full hot lunch at a university canteen costs approximately €2.75 — compared to €10–14 in a regular restaurant. This discount alone can save €150–200/month if you eat there daily.

Culture and Entertainment

Finnish museums, including the National Museum and the Finnish National Gallery, offer free or heavily discounted entry with a student card. Most theatres, cinemas (Finnkino), and concert venues offer student prices of 30–50% off. The Finnish National Opera offers standby tickets to students for €10.

Sports and Fitness

University sports facilities (UniSport in Helsinki, for example) offer very low-cost gym and fitness access for students — around €60–80 for a semester pass. This includes gym, swimming, group classes, and court sports.
