Erasmus+ Funding for Studying in Finland
Erasmus+ is the European Union's flagship mobility programme, and it is one of the most accessible forms of funding for students who want to study in Finland. If your home university has an Erasmus+ agreement with a Finnish institution, you can study in Finland for 3–12 months while continuing to pay home tuition fees.
How Erasmus+ Works
Under Erasmus+, your home institution provides a monthly grant of approximately €300–€520 depending on your home country's cost category. This is not a full scholarship — it is a supplementary grant to help cover additional living costs. You also continue to receive any scholarships or bursaries from your home institution.
Who Can Apply?
Any student enrolled at a European university that has an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with a Finnish partner university can apply. Most large European universities have agreements with several Finnish institutions. Check your home university's international office for the list.
Applying for an Erasmus+ Placement
Apply through your home university's international office, not through the Finnish university directly. The typical process: express interest in your second or third year, attend an info session, apply with a learning agreement and motivation letter, and receive a nomination which is sent to the Finnish partner.
Credit Transfer
Credits earned in Finland are transferred back to your home degree under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Your learning agreement must be agreed upon by both universities before you leave. Changes to the agreement should be documented and approved promptly.
Erasmus+ for Non-Europeans
Erasmus+ also has an International Credit Mobility (ICM) strand, which enables students from outside Europe to come to Finnish universities with a grant. Check if your home university has an ICM agreement with a Finnish institution — many universities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have these agreements.
