Nordic Scholarships Open to International Students
Beyond Finland-specific scholarships, a range of regional Nordic scholarships are available to international students who want to study in the Nordic region — many of which include Finnish universities as eligible destinations.
Nordic Council Scholarships
The Nordic Council of Ministers runs scholarship programs promoting mobility between Nordic and Baltic countries. These are primarily aimed at students from Nordic and Baltic countries studying within the region, but some strands are open to students from further afield.
Nordplus Higher Education
Nordplus is a Nordic exchange programme similar to Erasmus+. It supports student mobility between Nordic and Baltic institutions with grants of €200–€400/month. If your home university is a Nordplus partner, check whether a Finnish university is in your network.
Swedish Institute Scholarships (for Finland Studies)
The Swedish Institute offers scholarships for global professionals to study in Sweden, but also funds Visby Programme scholarships for students from Eastern Europe and the Baltic region, some of whom study at Finnish-Swedish institutions like Åbo Akademi.
NORDEN Scholarships for Arctic Studies
The University of the Arctic (UArctic) network includes Finnish universities and offers small grants for students pursuing Arctic-related studies. The University of Oulu and the University of Lapland are key nodes in this network.
How to Find Regional Scholarships
The Nordic Scholarship database at nordicwelfare.org and the University of Helsinki's scholarship portal are good starting points. Many regional scholarships are less competitive than global ones — your chances of success can be significantly higher.
